New IMO regulation covers industrial personnel on ships – we are ready to deliver flame retardant products
The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has implemented updated safety regulations affecting the transport of personnel at sea. This new regulation entered into force on 1 July 2024 and extends the scope of the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) Convention to include industrial personnel (IP).
What does the new IP code entail?
IMO has developed The International Code of Safety for Ships Carrying Industrial Personnel (IP Code) which is now mandatory. The Code regulates the safe carriage of industrial personnel on ships, as well as the safety during the transfer of personnel between ships and offshore installations. The new Code is incorporated into SOLAS through a new chapter (Chapter XV).
Industrial personnel are defined as "persons transported or accommodated on board to carry out offshore industrial activities on other ships and/or offshore installations."
What does this mean for fire safety?
With the new regulation, industrial personnel are also covered by the general fire safety regulations on ships. This means that flame retardant products are mandatory on board all ships to which the regulation applies, and the safety requirements are stricter than before.
